Strange problem with battery (burning hot)

I had left my laptop (dell 600m) on standby for a few days running off battery, so it was around 40% based on the little indicator they have on the battery. I plugged in the AC to charge it and went off for about 90min. I came back and the charging LED was blinking red, and the battery was burning hot, way hotter than it ever was. So I unplugged the AC adapter and put the system in Hibernate and removed the battery. And I was afraid it'll either explode or start burning up. It's cooled down now, but I was wondering what I should do about it now. It's worked fine for the past 5 years or so?

Check the PPID here http://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/ bottom of the page, it maybe one of the recalled ones. They were known to get very hot. I had one replaced a couple of months ago for a D600. They send you a new one if yours is a recalled one and ask that you send the old one back in the same box which also has a prepaid return shipping label. Pretty painless. Took about 10 days.

thanks for the info. I just checked, too bad my battery is not on the list. I'm afraid the battery is going to burn up if I plug it back in and charge it...

I would replace it... If it blows it is going to take the notebook with it. Like a suicide bomber.

If I were to buy this off eBay, how do I watch out for 'fake' batteries or counterfeit batteries from China?
