Strange problem ripping audio CDs...

I'm trying to rip a couple new CD's that I got, and I'm having some difficulty.

When I insert the CD, Windows XP alerts me that an audio CD has been put in, and gives me the option of what to do with it. If I browse the CD in Windows Explorer, it shows as an audio CD - I see the correct number of tracks, etc.

However...

No software appears able to play the CD or rip the tracks from it. WMP asks me to insert a disc, and EAC shows no disc loaded. Winamp will play the tracks, and correctly pull a CDDB ID on the disc/track, but nothing else will.

WTF is going on? This is not an enhanced CD, it's just a plain & simple audio CD. There should be no trouble pulling the audio off of it.

They shouldn't be, they're old albums (Metallica's Master of Puppets and Garage, Inc). I rip all my CD's onto my HD as full albums, then put the CD away.

Never had any trouble previously using EAC + LAME.

It just seems odd that I can't even play the CD, let alone rip it.
