My father's computer is having a strange issue. Apparently this has been going on ever since he got it, but hasn't complained till now.

EVERY time he starts up the system, it gets to the windows login screen. He clicks his name, and the system completely freezes before he can type his password. Hit the reset button on the case, and everything works fine after it reboots again. While running, the system is fine. No crashes, everything works great.
After its booted into windows, if you restart its usually ok. Do a shut down and turn it back on, and it will freeze at login again until reset is hit and it restarts yet again.

I just had him update his BIOS, that did not fix the problem.

Any ideas?

Sorry I don't know what kind of mobo etc he has. I'll post back later if it helps. I do know its an AM2 socket and an X2 CPU, Windows XP Pro. Radeon AIW video, not sure of the exact model.

Never heard of this, but it does not sound loike a hardware problem. Try searching the M$ Windows technical database for this sort of problem - might be OS issue.
