Strange problem, computer restarts while defragmenting

My computer is usually rock solid stable for everything, but when I went to defragment today my computer restarts about 5 min into it. Anyone heard of this before and know how to fix this? Thanks in advance

Do you have all the updates for your OS? If I remember correctly, this was a problem fixed by an update early on after XP was released.

Im not in safe mode and i have all updates installed

Try closing all the programs that access the hardrive. Like Anti-viruses, firewalls, that kinda thing and try it again.

Turn off findfast or whatever it's called that indexes the harddrive. It's annoying when ther HD starts seeking when it's idle!

Then you are in unsafe mode. (everyday Windows!)

That's very unusual. Try running memtest86. Do you have large cache enabled?

You should defrag in safe mode.
