Strange problem, computer restarts while defragmenting

My computer is usually rock solid stable for everything, but when I went to defragment today my computer restarts about 5 min into it. Anyone heard of this before and know how to fix this? Thanks in advance
 
Do you have all the updates for your OS? If I remember correctly, this was a problem fixed by an update early on after XP was released.
 
Try closing all the programs that access the hardrive. Like Anti-viruses, firewalls, that kinda thing and try it again.

Turn off findfast or whatever it's called that indexes the harddrive. It's annoying when ther HD starts seeking when it's idle!
