Strange problem: cannot cut/copy and paste?

This is in Windows 2000.

For the past several days, the simple Windows cut/copy and paste function hasn't been working properly, or sometimes at all.

If I highlight something, copy or cut (using either menus or keyboard shortcuts) then immediately paste (using menus or keyboard shortcuts), all that gets pasted is a single space.

This is the strangest problem I've encountered before. Has anyone seen such a thing, or have any recommendations on how to fix?

some kind of spyware or virus maybe?

have you scanned with ad-aware / spybot?

does this happen in all programs?

weird....
