Strange Printer Problem

Well, I've just installed a new laser jet, the Brother HL-1440. It seems to work just fine, except whenever I print something, I get an error message saying that I don't have enough space on my computer and that I should delete some files to free up space. This is obviously an error in error as there is 20gb of free space on the hard drive in question. The printer continues to print fine in spite of giving me this error message. It is really starting to become annoying. I've been fooling with the driver settings all day and somehow I got the error to go away. However, I wasnt really sure how I had accomplished this. So, I stupidly uninstalled the printer driver and reinstalled it thinking I would be able to figure out however I had fixed the error again. Well, I was WRONG. All I remember doing was messing around with the settings in the printer driver, and using different drivers, such as using signed 1440's, unsigned 1440's, signed 1450's, etc. The computer that the printer is installed on is running Windows XP, and if I print from across the network using a laptop w/ w98, I do not get the error. I am not sure if the problem is XP's fault, as I got it to work earlier. Does anyone have any ideas?

What lenght of printer cable are you using?
I used to get this error when I had a cable longer than 6ft.
You lose data in this type of scenario, and the printer sends back an error at times.....

I am using a USB cable, it's 10 feet, and I will admit that when I was trying to cut it free of those stupid little locking black bands, I punctured the shielding in one part of the cable. I covered it up with electrical tape. Do you think that could be the problem? Still, it seems odd that the cable could be the problem when I was able to fix it somehow by software. or was it a fluke?

I would definitely replace the cable either way, as it isnt good that way 🙂
It may not be the issue, but it could be part of it, a loss of communication or data can be rough on printing, when you print across the network it doesnt get the error? Try the cord, see what happens....

Cord didn't fix it. I also tried to connect it via parallel but that didn't fix the problem either. I may have to start just going though drivers, install new driver, test, delete, restart, install, test, etc. I've already wasted about 250 sheets on this. Any other ideas? You know, for the sake of the trees?

Try this out

Go to Device manger then select ECP PRINTER port (or whatever port your printer is on)
then go to the "PORT SETTINGS" tab.
Change it to NEVER use an interrupt.
If it is already set to this try chaning it to one of the other two options.

It might help you out, i know this caused an HP4550 i was working on to constantly itmeout.
If it does not work, look for newer drivers fomr their website or email tech suppor their, they may know of the tweak to fix it. 🙁

Well, I will definitely try calling them tomorrow when all the techies come back to work. Does anyone have any other ideas in the meantime?

Well, the printer has decided to print all by itself again w/o errors. Still absolutely no idea why - I'm beginning to think there may be something wrong with the memory inside the printer. Perhaps it needs to be cleared? In any case, I think I am going to need more memory for this thing. Anyone know a good place to buy printer memory? I might go for an ethernet interface as well...

YESSSSS!!!!!! I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT! All I had to do was switch the print processor to Winprint RAW and it works. Why does this make it work? Hell if I know, but I am really happy that I know now how get this damned thing working properly whenever I set it up.
