Upgraded the FSP Group 300W power supplies in 2 new Acer AST180 systems to
Antec's NEO HE 550 to improve reliability, but ran into a strange instant/early
reboot problem. System would not reboot after a shutdown, fans would spin and
front panel power on light would stay lit for only 2/3 seconds, then fans stop,
light off, reboot stops. Iterations just repeated the same sequence. Never
clocked how long it took to get going again, but it was longer than a few
minutes.
Once we tried to power up by working the switch on the power outlet strip, fans
started but very noisy, at least 1 of 3 fans was spinning way above normal
while the front panel light was OFF, no rebooting but safe cause fans were on.
Worked the front panel switch after about 30 seconds and the fan/s slowed to
normal, light on, system booted...wierd...but same no instant/early reboots
after shutdown.
This has to be a some kind of headscratching incompatibility between the system
and the Antec ps. Both of them might have temp control logic and somehow
interacting to get these results. Newegg agreed to RMA the Antecs as
incompatible. Antec support tried hard but could not diagnose this problem, nor
could Acer. And Acer has no compatible upgrade power supplies listed in their
database, we asked cause we still want to upgrade. That's our question to you
all out there, is there a 500/550W ps that the Acers won't react to the way
they did to the Antecs?? (Of course it would help to know WHY the system
reacted as it did, maybe someone can help).
Thanks, caycar.
