Strange Ping on the same network hub

My roommate has a computer in the living room and I'm sharing the T1 line thru a netgear hub. When we CS, his ping is usually much faster than mine. On avg 40 better. At times, he is 100 better. It's pissing me off! Every now and then we are even. What contributes to this differential? What can I do to fix it?

My computer specs are much better than his, other than him having 512mb ram, and I 256mb. Is it the NIC? I'm lost...

Tough call...

Having a computer that is "better" than his, is usually in the eye of the beholder. I`m sure you know your hardware, but there are too many variables for one to come up with a resolution when just you say it is better. Unless, of course, he has a PII300 and just lots of RAM. 😀

Could be:

-The extra RAM
-NIC
-Different network stack/OS
-NIC in a different slot, therefore not getting all the bandwidth she needs.
-Different network cable lenght or qaulity.
-Weak hub port.

To start, I would try a switch instead of a hub.

Good luck mon!

On an additional note my other roomate is connected straight to the network (skips my hub) and he gets the same high ping as me. But still comapred to the 2nd computer on my hub, the 2nd computer still gets fast pings while me and my roomate suffer. This 2nd computer is pure evil! :|
