Strange pheonomenon with USB hard drive?

Wasn't sure where to ask this, but maybe someone here has a clue.

I have a 2.5" 1TB Samsung drive in a USB enclosure that I use with my laptop. It's been working with no issues since september, but suddenly in the last few days I started having an issue where the drive would randomly disconnect, disappear from the system for a few seconds, and reconnect on its own. If I'm accessing files on the drive, the operation is terminated when this happens, which is very frustrating.

Anyway, I did lots of troubleshooting, and eventually isolated the problem, and it's very strange. The drive will disconnect if it is physically moved, picked up, nudged, or rotated. At first I thought it was a connection issue, but I tried wiggling the USB cable vigorously while keeping the drive stationary, and had no disconnect. The problem also ONLY happens when the drive is actually accessing or writing files. If it isn't doing anything, I can move it around without a disconnect.

Has anyone heard of this before? Could it be some safety mechanism gone haywire, involving an accelerometer? I know external drives don't usually have this, but it's an internal drive in an enclosure, so maybe its different. If so, is it possible to fix this on a software/firmware side, or is it a faulty hardware problem?

Are you sure it's not a power issue?

Those 1 TB drives may draw a bit more power, and some ports may be marginal in their ability to supply that power.

Open it up and check the drive connection inside, sounds like a lose connection somewhere.
