here's my problem... i'm doing over an old dell that my dad used to use, and giving it to the kid of a friend. the machine always worked well enough for dad, but when i picked it up and began to clean it out for the kid, i noted that teh optical drives were not working, and not showing up in my computer. they were in the hardware list, with yellow warnings and say not operational. they also show up during bootup.
nothing i do can turn these drives back on. so i just start over, and reinstall the operating system (2k) and everything is hunky dory until i do the last thing before i deliver this machine: i install nero burning software for the cdrw. NOW i know what the culprit is, something about the nero stuff(nero 5.5.7.1 and Incd 3.22). uninstalling software does not help. i assume something in the regestry has been altered but it is beyond me to go playing there without adult supervision. does anyone have any ideas on this before i once again start over? thanks zz03
