My neighbor has a Gateway Comp P3 700 - WinMe that has lost the search function??!! When you go into START > SEARCH a little gray box pops out with a black line in it not the :

files or folders
on the internet
People
Internet Audio?Video

Any idea what happened? I'm guessing one of his daughters deleted something to cause this cause I can't think of any other reason it would disappear.

Thx in advance for any ideas
 
Try right clicking on your taskbar, select Properties, and then customize the Start Menu. Look for an unchecked box next to Search and check it. Hope this helps.
