Strange odor in the bathroom

I can't believe I'm asking this on ATOT and expecting a serious answer, but here goes:

My wife and I have two bathrooms in our apartment. We've been having this problem recently with this godawful smell in her bathroom only, whereas my bathroom is fine. I'm not talking about the "Who the fsck didn't spray air freshener in here after they used the toilet!?!?!" kind of smell, so save the smart-ass remarks.

It is a pretty rank odor though, so I'm guessing it's sewer gas or maybe something caught in a drain or pipe that causing the smell. I can't pinpoint it as coming from the toilet, sink or shower, though.

We're planning on calling the manager to get a maintenance guy in there to check it out pretty soon, but I figured I'd call on the boundless wisdom of ATOT first.

Not that I know of. The management did a routine mold inspection some time ago and didn't detect any problems.

Besides, it definitely doesn't smell like mold or mildew in the bathroom.

The plumbing is working fine and the water isn't funky? Is it on the ground floor? Is there a space underneath? Did you lose your precious hampster Squeeky lately? In winter a lot of rodents get caught in the walls/flooring looking for a warm home and wind up decomposing sooner than they would have hoped.

Bust out the bleach and start pouring it down every drain you can find. Thats what I would do.

i am guessing that the vent pipe for that bathroom is obstructed, maybe a squirrel nest or bird nest?, and that the gas that is supposed to vent up through it is instead venting through the sink and tub drains.

My guess is either something died in a vent or maybe a mouse died under your sink or cabinet? I'd think if it were in the pipe's all of your bathrooms would be affected.

Thanks for the replies, folks. :D

I'm going to go with the blocked vent idea. I can't say it really smells like something rotting in the bathroom, although you never know.
