Strange NV Silencer 5

I bought a BFG6800GTOC when BB carries it in their store. Of course, the 2nd version cooling of this card sucks big time, so I decided to buy the new NV Silencer 5. Once I've installed the cooler, I found out something strange in it. Instead of sucking wind from inside the case and blowing the hot air to the back (outside) of the case, it actually sucks air from the back and blows wind into the system. When I put my hand right under the fan, I can feel a very strong wind blowing at my hand.

I tried to isolate the problem, so I unplugged all the fans in my system other than cpu fan. And when I put my hand under the NV Silencer, I can still feel the wind is blowing @ my hand. And when I put a piece of paper at the exhaust, it doesn't move at all. I emailed Scythe about the situation and they haven't gotten back to me yet (since yesterday). I think I have seem the similar complaints at different forums but I can't find the solution anymore.

Anyone here have any solutions? Or, does your Silencer does the same too but you never realize???

There is strong turbulence near that fan. You can not find out the air flow direction that way.
Close the case and hold a piece of Kleenex near the exhaust of your silencer. You will see that air is coming out.

Edit:
Just to clarify something.
I do not have that cooler. I have the original silencer version 3.

One thing that may contribute to the problem is that the air flow coming out is not that strong. If you have negative pressure inside your case, there will be even less air coming out. If that is the case, you can open/enlarge the air intake hole of the case or add an intake fan.

Navid, I guess I didn't explain myself clearly. I did the Kleenex test already. The Kleenex barely moved at all. Yes, I know about the possiblility of negative air pressure, but the tissue paper doesn't move at all. Also, when I put my hand under the Silencer, I feel a very strong wind blowing @ my hand, not just some weak air turbulance that you have described.

I clearly recalled that someone else had the same problem like I've described....

If air was going in from the back, the Kleenex would be pulled towards the case and would stick to it.
May be you expect a lot of air flow. It does not provide that kind of air flow.

I have held my hand near the fan too. It feels like lots of air coming out of the fan inside the case. And it does. But, a lot goes in too!

Which directoin does the fan rotate?

It looks like it should rotate clockwise.
Even if it turns the wrong way, it still is going to send air out the back because of centrifuge, but, much less. So, that may be the problem.

I noticed the same thing firerock, there is a lot of turbulence around the fan part of the cooler, and i think there is a tiny bit of air coming out the back, but NOT much. but it has to be working OK cause the temps stayed within a couple degrees of stock, and it's inaudible. 🙂

no no no you guys arent listening to him cause if you had maybe you would have posted a fix for the problem cause I have the SAME thing.. I can put my hand in my case and feel a lot of air blowing straight down from the fan and not out the case. Its sucking air in. If anyone knows a fix please post.. I'll search the internet until then. Thanks.

Have you actually put a peice of paper at the exhaust of the cooler? Because yeah with my hand it feels the opposite, as if the exahust sucks and the fan it blowing toward my hand, but with a peice of paper the opposite is happening. The paper is sucked towards the fan and blown away from the rear exahust.

i use an nv5 on the same card. i also feel turbulence at the fan, feeling like it's blowing out. despite that, if paper is placed horizontally near the inlet, it is sucked in.

it is definately blowing air OUT of the case.

If you're having this 'problem' take the side of your case off and retest, it's most likely blowing air out.
