I wondered if ASUS merged with HP?
Opened a new HP desktop for a relative, windows 8, and the "desktop" square when selected goes into the desktop where the background screen photo is of ASUS laptops. And the word ASUS at the bottom in silver.
Wonder if ASUS has something to do with HP now? Or if ASUS supplies some desktop configuration on windows 8 pc's?
Kinda strange.

Photo is from the new HP windows 8 pc

Asus has been an OEM supplier of HP mainboards, on certain HP models, for quite some time.

I am pretty sure the Asus is actually the OEM supplier for the entire laptop, not just the system board.

Huh. Wierd. You would think that if Asus supplied laptops and/or laptop mainboards to HP, that HP laptops wouldn't suck as much as they do.

(Is this the "new HP"? Not Invented Here?)

ASUS makes them to what ever spec you want. I think it has been years (decade or more) since HP actually made a PC / Laptop.

I called HP tech and they had not a clue. Almost insisted that was impossible.
Then I went on to ask why WMC was missing on her new HP windows 8 touch screen machine.
The tech asked permission to access the system remotely. Why not, I said.
Then he did some stuff, very friendly guy located in the Philippines, suggested we have coffee while waiting, then after doing an obvious download on her system the system rebooted, he says your system now has WMC.
I also noticed it now says windows 8 PRO, not just windows 8 as before.
So she got a $70 upgrade for free.
I also seen when he was accessing that he entered a product code. All remotely.
So she will definitely need to backup her system asap with this nice little freebee update.

Still, the Asus thing is weird and unresolved.

Yeah, the Asus wallpaper is weird indeed.

If your computer came with a Windows 8 (non-Pro) sticker on the side of the computer then you are not supposed to have WMC. So you did get a free upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. That tech was not supposed to do that, but just be glad he did.

If your computer came with a Windows 8 Pro sticker on the side of the computer then the wrong version (non-Pro) was installed by default and the tech upgraded to the correct version in order to get you WMC. So you didn't get anything extra that you weren't supposed to get in the first place.

Anyway, WMC is only available to Windows 8 Pro.

In the long run the most likely cause for this is the HDD was imaged with the wrong image. Asus / Sager / the like make tons of laptops and image the drives. Some one grabbed an hdd from the "ASUS" pile or clicked "ASUS" on the imaging system by mistake. If you pull the HDD and it has the HP sticker I would guess a bad image otherwise it was a mispull.

Most likely this. The same company probably images drives for multiple makes and one got mixed up. Good idea to check and see if the drive has any obvious HP labeling. I'd also double-check and make sure all the correct drivers are installed.
