Strange networking problem with WIN2K

Hello again everyone!
I have this weird problem with Win2K. Here at work we have a network and I used to run windows 98 and would from time to time access other people's computers for files for whatever reason. well I've been running 2K for about a month now and I yesterday had to access the server for a Virus update file and it told me access was denied. well when I was using windows 98 it let me in just fine, I am using the same login credentials. So, to confirm this I went to a windows 98 computer and logged in and I was able to hit the server and download the files fine. Going back to my computer, I could only see the network computers but not access them. It's weird and I think it has something to do with Domain problems but I can only set it up to use a workgroup and not a domain, I really have no idea what to do, but I would like to be able to access the other computers with my own box. I could always go back to windows 98 and have no problems at all (lol) but I'd rather try and fix this strange problem... again, most of my networking needs are met, I can surf the net, hit the outside web, anything like that, download email from the mail server here, but I can't access the drives on the computers.. well if anyone knows what I should do please let me know!

Thanks alot guys!

What do you mean? You can't join the domain? With 2k? Why not? Well, even if you can't join the domain you should still be able to see other computers in My Network Places. Is your office all running just one protocol like TCP/IP or are you running something else like netbeui in addition?

Have you just recently had problems with this computer (it could do it before with 2k, or you haven't ever been able to do it with 2k?) Just a couple of questions that I was curious about.

I have never been able to access other computers (with this win2k box), only TCP/IP is installed, it has the same settings as a equal 98 box and I can access everything with the 98 box, I am at loss, I have no idea what to do, if I try to setup the domain, it does not work, I can use a workgroup and I can get on the network and see my computer in my workgroup area, but I can't access anything like I said.. I can enter a domain in windows 98 and a workgroup all in the same setup box but in 2k it's only a workgroup, when i select domain, workgroup gets greyed out, and then I put in the domain info where it asks and it does not work, comes back with invalid something or other. never really bothered me cause i could get online and do what i needed to do. But now it bugs me, I just can't access the server or other computers, everything else works, it just seems weird!
do you know what i am saying though?
there has to be one small thing I am not doing, I dunno, I upgraded to 2K from windows 98 so it kept the same settings and it was working before.. (???)

thanks again...

When you're using workgroup, can you ping other computers by IP address, by host name? When you're using domain, does domain controller security settings require that your computer be given access rights?

I can ping the other computers yes, they are there, I can see them on the network, but it says access is denied when I try to access them. What exactly do you mean by Domain controller and access rights? it asks for a domain, login and password, of which I enter what they should be and they do not work.

I had some problems, yesterday actually, getting a laptop up and running on a mixed NT (server) and win 2k (client) environment. I had to right click on my computer and select properties. Select the network identification tab and then select the first box. You may have your profile set up just the way you like it right now but you need to tell your computer that it needs to find the username and password on the domain controller. The first box will walk you through creating a profile that your computer will look for when it logs in. Worked for me yesterday at least.

Just FYI: If you haven't been able to join a domain with your win2k box there is a good chance that your computer is logged in under a username with a lot more rights and priveledges than your profile allows on the server, and if you try to access another win2k or NT computer it will realize that you don't have admin level rights on their box and then shut you out. You could logon as guest or something and then probably be able to access their information, if they gave guest that priveledge.

You know that sounds very right igiveup.. Could very well be, I think i'll create a user as a regular user and see if I can get into everything after that, sounds like an excellent idea though!

Thanks man! 🙂
