Strange network problem.

I have a Linksys 10/100 PCI card on a Tyan S1833DL with 2 PIII 500 running Windows 2000 Pro. The protocols are TCP/IP & NetBUIE. The computer can access internet. It can copy files from any other computer. However, if you attempt to copy a file from this computer to any other computer (mixed Windows 98SE, NT4, 2000 Server & 2000 Pro), you'll get an unexpected network error. The other computer can see this computer and it's drive. But if you try to access the drive, you will get an unexpected error.

I've moved the card to a different slot, I changed network wires, change ip & reinstall protocols but I got the same thing. It seems that if you attempt sending files you'll have an error but if you're only getting the file, it's ok.

Do you think it's the new network card orsomething is conflicting? The only other card in this computer is a PCI STB Horizon 64 network card that has no video driver for Windows 2000.

Very odd. I'd try something less Windows-oriented, e.g. send a large file from the problem system to one of the others using FTP. That would confirm the overall direction of a large amount of data is not the issue and confirm or deny a hardware problem. Then I'd look at security issues (altho this doesn't sound like that), and then NetBEUI config (altho that's usually trivial, no?)

Sorry I can't offer more.

If this is happening when you first initiate the transfer, it could be a permissions problem on the share. Check to make sure that everyone has permission on the share, and that they have full control.

The problem machine, I'll call it CompA, has Everyone allowed full access. Some of the other machine like Win98 machines, don't have any password on the share and can be accessed by CompA. If you attempt to copy a file from CompA drive to Win98 or any other machine's drive, using CompA, you'll get an error. If you are copying from any machine to CompA drive, using CompA computer, it's ok.

If you use another machine, like Win98, you can see the shared resources of CompA Drive. If you attempt to browse the drive, you'll get an unexpected error. Usually, a permission or sharing restriction will prompt for a password or log in screen. This one is different.

I'll try to experiment some more.

I installed PCAnywhere in the problem machine. I can control it using this program and transfer file using the file transfer. It seems that the problem is in the NETBEUI. That's the protocol that I have even witht he original NIC. I think somehow, when I remove the old NIC & replace it with the Linksys without unstalling the old driver & setting the LANA numbering got got screwed.
