I have a network set up in my home that consists of three computers. Two are wired to a WRT54G router, and one is wirelessly connected with a WPA-PSK.
All machines are WinXP Pro based and have Simple File Sharing turned off. Each system has a user account set up for the two of us that use the systems. We have the same password on both accounts at all machines. The Network Sharing permissions are set at Full Control for the shared folders on each machine. The NTFS permissions are set to Full Control for both users on each share of each machine. All the computers are on the same subnet. All have File & Printer sharing enabled.
As you can see from the picture in the link [ Link ] there is a pattern of what is allowed and what is not. It started as the XPS system not being allowed to view shares on Desktop. Now it's moved around a bit and the XPS system is denied access to any shares on Notebook, as the diagram shows. (XPS is the wireless node.) The funny thing is, XPS was able to use Network shares from Notebook earlier today. Now it's suddenly denied. BUT! iTunes on XPS can play music from iTunes on Notebook. Uh???
I've disabled the shares on Notebook and replaced them, but no change. I have Full Control for both users, but it doesn't make any difference. I have rebooted all machines twice. My router is set to renew IP's every two hours. (Was set at once per day, but I changed that last night, and this problem has existed a lot longer than that.)
As of now, XPS can see the shares on Notebook, but can't get into them in any way. (Windows Explorer.) I have limited the "Everyone" user to minimal access on all machines so that the user ID's and passwords would be used. Why does one computer get prompted for a password when another doesn't? I'm confused.
