Well I've encountered a bit of a strange issue and I'm wondering if my router is the problem or if there's a setting in Windows 10 that I need to change or if perhaps I should use different firmware. After updating to Windows 10 I've noticed that when Steam maxes the download speed (typically somewhere around 15 MBytes/sec, yes that's megabytes) I'm not able to do anything else involving the internet. Any other connections that were open when I start the download stay open and are fine (so if I happen to be running TeamSpeak or Skype they're fine) but any new network based applications have issues.
Logging into my router (Asus RT-N16) I notice that the CPU usage during these downloads is typically hovering between 95 and 99%. Since it is a single core router that's not too surprising although I'm not sure if it was that high under Windows 7. My network is as follows:
2 client PCs running Windows 10
1 client running Windows 7 (my HTPC)
1 server running Windows server 2008 R2 (provides DNS & other services)
Various other wireless & wired clients (just listed the main ones that use the network the most)
1 HP Procurve 3500yl-48G network switch
1 Asus RT-N16 router (currently running Asuswrt-merlin 378.50, newer versions of merlin do not support this router)
1 Arris CM820 cable modem
So do I need to change a setting somewhere in Windows 10, use different firmware for my router or is it time for an upgrade to the router?
