System is a Sony Vaio, 32MB, standard sony tower components running win95. Have a problem with the cdrom drives...one is a internal Sony that came with the tower...the other is a external parallel backpack cd-rw. All the correct drivers are loaded and there are no conflicts, errors when booting, etc. Parallel port is set to ECP. USB is disabled, IDE and serial ports set to auto in BIOS, no conflicts in 95.

Problem is both cdrom units show up in device manager with the correct drive letter. The internal is seen by the BIOS. Can right click on both drives and do eject and both open up. But both say device not ready when you put a cd in and try to read it.

So far, have reinstalled the backpack drivers,
have removed both cdroms from device manager and let win95 find them,
have removed the PIIIx PCI driver and both IDE controllers from device manager,
have removed the Sony cdrom controller from device manager and let 95 find it,
checked sony tech support and backpack support for options (none given).
Did a search on anandtech forums for this topic in the past (not found).
None of these has helped in any way.

Looking for suggestions or known problems.

One update - the internal Sony CDROM access light blinks once at random...sometimes every couple seconds, sometimes every minute or so. The external backpack cdrw doesn't blink at all that I've noticed.
