Strange monitor problem

A friend of mine told me of his strange monitor problem. Basically, his Acer AL2416W stays on and works fine for around 30 mins, then starts to artifact, then turns white and then black. He's tried both imputs (DVI/VGA) and it does the same thing. Also tried multiple OSes. However, the monitor works fine when left in a BIOS screen for a long time, and does not experience the artifacting.

Is this an issue with the monitor or an issue with the computer it's attached to?

GPU is putting heat into heatsink faster than the heatsink can remove it. Thats explains the ~30min delay. BIOS screen does not stress the GPU and create heat, so no artefacts. Test this by setting the computer air intake next to an air-conditioner to cool it down.

+1 for over-heating

check the heatsink / fan for dust, clean it if required... also i've seen quite a few GPUs where the push pin type fixing has come loose, meaning the heatsink is not making very good contact with the gpu.

hopefully no permanent damage has been caused.
