I'll try to explain this as best I can.

After buying a new dell 2.5ghz w/ a Radeon 9700 tx I hooked it up to my 4 year old 17" dell monitor (i forget the model number, but it came with the old xps t series...m70 maybe?). Then I started noticing a sort of "wavy line" effect on dark colored areas (WinXP login screen, dark gray areas). The only other way I can describe it is a a bunch of slightly dark bands moving up or down the screen. And the weird thing is, it is not constant. It happens randomly then lasts for a long time. I never had this problem before with my old 64mb VIVO.

I tend to notice everything when it comes to video and sound so this really bothers me. By the way, I've tried many different resolutions and refresh rates and they all produce the same effect. So do you think maybe my video card is just too good for my old monitor or something?

This is a known problem with R9700 cards. You can check www.rage3D.com forums for more info on it. AFAIK there is no fix for this. Usually an incompatablity with monitors. PM Rollo about this, because I know he had the same prob with his 9700pro when he first bought it. I think it was with a Sony monitor, not sure.

There is a thread about this either in video or general hardware too.

really? this is good news for me because i happened to buy a new monitor before this all started, i should be recieving it soon. it is a ViewSonic P95F+

do you think that monitor will have problems? also what is the word to describe this problem so i know what to search for? i'm thinking "wavy lines" isn't precise enough

Here you go Maladroit

Some people have fixed this problem by hooking their monitors up to the dvi port with the dvi to Vga adapter, you might try that.

I don't think you will have a problem with a Viewsonic. But there might be issues with certain models. I would browse over Rage3D forums to get a general idea. Also search for "scrolling lines" in either the forums their, or here at AT.

Hope that helps ya out. :)
