strange monitor power issue

i have my monitors set to power off after 1 minute of inactivity through the windows power settings...and they do..for the first few times...then they just stay on for hours...if i go back into the settings and change it to 2 minutes then back to 1 minute and then apply it they start to power off again...but only a few times...then its back to them staying on constantly...i dont get it 😕

any ideas?

it was the mouse sending input randomly due to the cheap mousepad 🙂

Well, I don't really know why, but why would you set it to do that after a minute or two?
Why would you want to?

It's going to stress the hell out of the monitor (assuming it's a CRT), and shorten it's life by a huge amount.

There may be a hidden feature in windows that stops this after so many times to prevent monitor damage...good idea.
 
i'm just using that for testing...its easier to see if its powering off after 1 minute than to wait 20...but it does the same thing no matter what time i set it on...works fine for a few times then just stays on
 
Seriously, if you are doing that to a CRT, it WILL kill it eventually, you are turning on and off a circuit with 10,000's (about 50000V actually, I think) on and off and either the tube will puke, or more likely, the high voltage coil will pop.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this isnt normal to help prevent what you are trying to do..

i was just using the 1 minute thing as an example...the i usually set it at 20 minutes...but if i set it at 5 hours then go to bed the monitor will still be on the next morning, is the point...it doesnt matter what i set the time to

Are you using an optical mouse without a mousepad, or a really crappy mousepad? I know my friend uses a cheaper Belkin optical mouse that doesn't track her desk properly sometimes so the cursor will "creep" along the screen without any user input.

If this is the case, then I suspect that whenever your monitor doesn't turn off, the computer is still getting input from the mouse.

Or maybe I'm way off base here...
 
i had/have the same problem on a viewsonic a75 crt. i say had because i sold it to a friend and have because he still asks me about it.

i had it set to either 10 minutes or sometimes 5 and then suddenly it started powering down only to wake again sometime later and stay on until i turned it off.

i did have an optical, wireless mouse (rosewill combo, cheap as hell) but the mouse powers itself off after 3 minutes and then the monitor would shut down after. you have to click it to wake it and if i did that when the monitor was actually powered down it would wake the monitor fine. so i kind of dismissed that as the problem. perhaps the keybaord was trying to link up and setting it off, i don't know. i gave him the mouse/keyboard as well so maybe it is some bizarre interference problem. but i don't think so. my other thought was an aging monitor, but i don't see why/how it would do that.

there was another thread on this with at least a couple of people having the same problem but i never saw a resolution. hopefully someone will have an idea.

optical mouse with a cheap azz 1 dollar mousepad...thats not a bad idea at all...i think i'll turn my mouse over and see if it still does it...thx

wouldn't be my solution as the mouse powers off after 3 minutes.
maybe it is the keyboard sending out random signals.
i'll have him try it.
