Strange Monitor Activity

My monitor acts up in a weird way every so often. If I wake it up off of standby mode, the screen shows up squeezed in on the left and right. I usually have it setup so that the screen takes up the whole monitor, but when this happens, there is about a half inch gap on each side. If I turn it off then back on it goes away...

I was wondering if this is a sign that the monitor is about the die out....also, could a bad monitor end up damaging my video card or anything else?
