Strange modem slow-down.

So I'm using a generic 56k pci modem (I'm cheap). It normally connects at 45.0 kbps or so. Well it started connecting slower 38, then 28kbps. I changed cables, reinstalled the modem with no change. Then it went way down...usually 4.8kbps.
The other computers in the house were connecting at normal speeds.

I had a Zoom usb modem which I installed and the connection is back up to around 50kbps. I never heard of a modem failure like this. Any ideas?

Err...no, I'm staying with a modem. Heh.

Is it a WinModem? WinModem relies more on system resources, etc. So if you're running something in the background that is intensive, it could cause a slow down in connection, cause its unable the process the data process quick enough.

Most good "hardware" modems take stress off the you system, so data transfer is consistent.

I don't think that's the issue at all. There are no intensive progs running....nothing changed except the modem started connecting slower and slower. Other identical modems in the house are connecting ok.

Sounds like a strange hardware problem, but what?

Perhaps you were getting a lot of retransmits or other errors. A system monitor might give some indication as to the problem(s). Considering the price of modems, it's probably not worth investigating, except for curiousity's sake.

I had that problem due to my phone lines....good connect then as the modem errored it retrained the next speed down....and down . . a n d d o w n 🙁

being you have good connects in the other rooms, I'd first either swap modems or swap rooms and see if it improves. It's possible the inside wire is bad but unlikely.

Your modem could have taken a surge.
