Strange lockups; corrupt file system?!

I have a strange problem:

My F.E.A.R. game crashes a second or two after I click on the desktop shortcut, locking up the computer requiring a hard reboot. System is usually overclocked (running Prime 95 and Memtest for 12-14 hours with no errors), but clocking to rated speed makes no difference ? same crashes.

Quake IV, HL2, Age of Empires III, 3dMark 03 and 05, Prime 95, Aquamark, Super Pi, run with no problems.

I?ve tried disabling on board sound and removing the video card drivers and using just Windows VGA drivers. I?ve tried taking out the FEAR disc, the game crashes before it tries to verify the DVD is in the drive. I?ve tried reinstalling and playing FEAR with and without the latest patches, I?ve tried 6.4 and 6.5 Catalyst drivers. I have the latest Nforce 4 drivers. Took out one of the sticks of RAM and ran single channel. I've tried starting the game from the menu that comes up when you put the disk in. None of the above makes a difference.

System:

Opteron 146
1G Kingston ValueRam 3200 dual channel
Antec 450W PSU
Radeon X850XT
Asus 8N5X Mobo

I've run out of ideas on what else I can try. Any ideas?

I don't know much about game playing, but have you considered the possibility that the game CD might be bad/damaged ???

Hi!

Backup your saves, and re-install the game. If all of your other games are running fine I'd say it's that game that's causing the issue, or try a nocd patch since you own the orignal game.

Well, it's no longer just FEAR, it is now EVERY application, I can barely get into Windows. This is after running stress tests without a hitch. Memory passed 12 hours of memtest with flying colors. CPU ran Prime 95 for 14 hours without an error. Windows corrupt?
PSU problem? It's a quality PSU, and brand new.

I have two seagates, 80GB and 200GB. A few years old, don't remember exactly how many. Good idea, I'll test those next.

OK, so ran the hard disk utility, it says the file systems on all 4 partitions on two physical drivers are corrupt. HOW??

Try this...insett your xp os disk and boot to the disk...go into the repair counsol and at the prompt..type c:\chkdsk /r. Be patient this process take a while to run...it might fix the problem..if not...try a repair reinstall.

That's gonna be my next step. I'm just wondering how this happened all of a sudden.

possibly from a defrag.

I've seen minor corruption problems before after rebooting from a defrag of a lightly fragmented system.
