Strange linux problems

This is really wierd, tell me if you've seen anything like it.

I have this old digital 486 66 that I am trying to install RH from 6.2 down to 5.2 on. With the exception of 5.2 (more later) immediately after the installation is completed, after LILO, after it uncompresses the kernel, at the start of booting it, I get a bunch of crap scrolling over the screen. Imagine this "[C00124314]" with random looking hex numbers all over the screen never stopping. Has anyone seen this? This is with all 6.x

I know that 5.2 is supposed to run, but I have issues doing an ftp install (from local servers) and I have no cdrom drive. There was 5.2 running and I have an identical box running said version. I have also been assured that 6.2 should run on it by a guy who has done 'several' installs on identical machines.

Any thoughts from anyone?

ps. This also happens with the boot disk.

I've seen this before when trying to boot linux on a machine that was overclocked too far. In my experience, it was what linux did while windows was doing the "Windows Protection Error" thing on startup.

I don't know what problem your 486 is having. Just thought I'd mention where I'd seen the mess before....

Good luck,
