Strange LAN problem

My friend wants me to come into his work and take a look at their network, but after hearing their issue, I wanted to consult you guys to see if you have any input. Here is the situation (from what I understand):

They have 10-12 computers on the network, with 2 being file servers.
They all share files and access each others computers since they work in computer animation and use each others images all the time. So, before I get into it, I will call the computer sharing the files the host and the computer accessing them, the client.

So, up until a week ago, everything was fine. But, now everytime the client computer connects to the host computers shared files, the client computer restarts. And this doesn't just happen to one client, it happens to all clients. The host computer is unaffected. My first suggestion was to just back up the stuff on the drive and format it and start over with Windows, but its the boss's computer and he doesn't want to (so thats the end of that option).

Any ideas? I am at a loss because I cannot think of anything that would make another computer hard-reboot like that, especially over the network. Thanks in advance for all replies and I can get more info from him if it is needed.

Jonny -

I fully acknowledge that this may have nothing to do with it, and in fact may be a very stupid answer - but have they checked out whether they are infected with that blaster worm? Doesn't it cause spontanious reboots?

I don't know of any "normal" (typical) reason that all computers on a network would reboot. I think you asked the right place though - there are some pretty bright people here.

Thanks for the reply. That was my first question to him too and he said they are all patched up (I will verify when I get in since it still seems strange). Other than a virus or worm, I just can't think of any reason a computer would restart just by connecting to another computer on the network. Any one else with ideas?

take a look at how the client shuts down... since you said hard reboot im guessing when you access a share (or try to), the screen just dies and you back into a normal boot up.

And you said that ALL clients are having this problem? if thats the case, you can rule out a hardware problem on the clients.

so the only common components now are viruses which would crawl through every share on the network very quickly and infect everything, or something the host is doing...

first step is to virus scan....

Thanks, I will make sure their network is virus free first. Other than that, I don't think it pays to go through hour after hour of check and test for equipment on the LAN and would be cheaper and faster to just format and reinstall. The guy doesn't even have all that much on that machine, so it would be a 1.5 hour project, max. But, I will go in on Monday and see how I can get done and see how they want to proceed. Thanks again for the replies.

Take a laptop or one of your machines and see if it has the same problem... Might not be possible if they don't want to give you access rights, but it could rule out things if you know yours is happy.

However, I've never heard of a problem like this... very very weird.

Make sure they are accessing the other machines by using an actual share name and not an administrative share (C$, D$, etc.).
