Strange lag problem with AIM

Something veeeewy stwaaange is going on with my AIM. Ok, check this out:

I'm using the latest (I think) version 5.5.3583 of AIM, and I'm getting like a 5 - 7 second lag between when I send a message and it actually goes through. I've seen something happen like this before, but it never lasted days and days like it is doing to me now.

I tried disabling my Norton Internet Security 2004 and it has no effect. The problem seems to be affecting every AIM client I have. GAIM has similar problems, and my Trillian 2.0 lags a tiny bit, but signs off and on again every couple minutes (which upsets AOL and the server tells me to wait 10 minutes before reconnecting).

All this seemed to come about when I last ran Ad-Aware 6.181. I remembered that it had me do a restart so that it could eliminate something that must have been in-use and couldn't be deleted the normal way. I've got a bad feeling that had something to do with my problem because my problem isn't confined to just the plain old AIM 5.x client. I did re-install AIM and it didn't help.

This might be a clue, too: My Outlook Express 6 seems to connect to the mail server, then lag for an extra couple seconds before it d/l's my new mail. I say 'might' because the S.U. e-mail server is always acting stupid.

Does anyone have any suggestions/solutions? I'm at a loss.

An update:

I just tried running XP in safe mode and still got the same results.

What else could be affecting AIM? It still works, it's just got that added 7 or 8 seconds where the program freezes and then sends the message that I entered.

No, I'm not using a proxy server or anything like that. Just a good ol' Linksys router.

Maybe I should attempt installing an older version. Are there any archives anywhere that I can grab old versions from?

I also completely uninstalled Norton Internet Security and switched to Zone Alarm and that didn't affect anything either.

Are you at school ?

Our school firewall did this once, everyone had severe lag in IM.

I changed port number and server, and it fixed it right up...

Yeah, I seem to be having the same problem with GAIM. I notice in AIM, the whole program seems to freeze up when I send a message. I don't think that there's any lag time in the messages coming TO me.
