strange issue

I recently upgraded my pc to a q6600 and Asus P5N32-e SLI Mobo. For some strange reason, when I press the power switch, nothing happens, no sound, no signal to the PSU. But when I took the motherboard out of the case and connected everything, it works fine. Right now I have it working by keeping the motherboard outside the case, and the rest of the stuff inside but its such a mess as u can imagine.

You did install the motherboard standoffs in the case right?

yes. basically I took out the motherboard in my signature and replaced it with this one. It was a pain to get the whole thing in too, because there was no clearance to plug the ATX 12V connectors once the motherboard was in the case.

Oh no - see BlueAcolyte's nearby thread: "I am so very stupid!" However, if you did NOT forget the standoffs, then you definitely have something contacting something it shouldn't. The standard, metal standoffs go only to mobo holes that are specifically for standoffs (generally have tinned rings (lands) around them) - so make sure you don't have any EXTRA metal standoffs where they shouldn't be. Your mobo manual will point out the designated mounting holes.

There are lots of extra holes in mobos these days that could be used for extra standoffs, but you should use plastic ones like this for those - you'll have to trim the bottom nub off with knife and/or side cutters. I like as much support as I can get around the card slots and memory, so I use these plastic ones wherever I have a free hole in those areas and a standard metal one can't be used.

Thats a good idea zepper, I typically just use metal standoffs in the neccessary areas but, I really like that idea.
