Strange iPod behavior

I got a 6th Gen iPod classic around mid November 2008. It's had no problems until now.

The problem started yesterday evening, when I noticed the playback was stuttering and dropping quite often. Then I noticed that navigating had started to become really slow, after selecting a folder it would take over a minute to show the folder. By then videos had become nigh on unplayable, it was stuttering so much.

The other thing I noticed was that the hard drive had become rather loud. Usually I could hear the HDD noise only when I pressed the thing up against my ear, but last night I could hear it clearly when I was holding it, and today I can hear it from the other side of my bedroom (no exaggeration).

Also starting this morning, playback failed completely. When I connected it to my computer to do a restore, I got an error, 1439 (I can't remember the message, sorry, and the iPod is now too dead to replicate the error), after which it failed. I tried to reformat, but My Computer said it was unformatted and wouldn't let me choose any file system to format it into. After I pressed Cancel, I got a window saying something along the lines that the drive could not be formatted. It was after that that my computer and iTunes stopped recognizing the iPod at all.

So now I have, for all intents and purposes, a dead iPod. The screen is stuck on the reboot screen with the Apple logo on it, the hard drive won't stop spinning and seeking, and no computer I have will recognize it.

The iPod's no longer covered by warranty, and I think it's safe to say that it's probably beyond all repair. Thoughts?

Sounds like the HDD died... nothing you can really do about it. This time get a flash based player and hopefully it'll last longer.

I agree, it happened on my Classic a few months ago. Slowed down and started sputtering threw playlists.

Nope, it's the nature of the beast when it comes to hard drives. Moving parts means sooner or later it will fail. Yes it failed earlier than I'd expect, but still...
