Did you guys ever have a problem where the computer just doesn't want to connect to the internet? This dude's computer connects to the network, DHCP, etc... and gets an IP address but it doesnt get any internet access. The ethernet adapter is fine, I reinstalled that and TCP and redid the LAN settings and NIC settings and the problem is still there. The card is connected to the network though and can recieve and send packets just fine, he said the system worked before he went on break but when he went home, his ISP redid the settings and when he came back it didnt work anymore. I redid his settings properly and now the same problem, even tried a system restore on it, basically everything short of a reinstallation of XP which I'll do later tonight. Anyone have any clues? BTW, theres no problem with the jack, we tried hig roommate's jack and it still didnt work.

Does he have TCP/IP connectivity (ie can he ping anything?).

Try to have him ping his local gateway (the first hop on his connection). Then have him try to ping the 'net by IP (204.71.200.243 = yahoo by IP).

If you can ping yahoo by IP but not by domain have him set different DNS servers (or change to enable & specify if it's disabled).

Excuse me for the stupid question!

How is computer is connected to the Internet.

If it connected to a Network, how the network is connected to the Internet?

You might run into problems because of the school LAN. Most education routers have ACL's (Access Lists) that define which IP addresses can be forwarded to the internet.
Also, is the IP address he's receiving an internal IP (private) or public?
