I'm actually anticipating seeing the downfall of society. The breakdown of the glue that holds it all together, survival of the fittest, only the strong survive......
Is that normal?

Ah well. Bring it

I find myself doing the same thing/feeling the same way.

Bring it on!

Although, I do admit that the complete opposite appeals to me, too. I do hope I get to settle down and have a family.

We haven't even seen the tip of the iceberg if even a shred of the pessimism involving our planet's oil supply is true.

Fortunately, it isn't even close to true...

I'd like you to prove it instead of just blindly believing that "everything will be OK". What makes you so sure?

I mean hello? We have used one half of the worlds currently known oil supply in the last one hundred years. ONE HALF. That is an undisputible fact. The population at the turn of the century was ~1 billion.

It doesen't take a rocket scientist to figure that the second half won't take 100 years to disappear.

Unless we find some huge oil reserve(equal or size in greater to the oil supply in the middle east), we have most likely already hit our peak oil production. Russia hit peak oil production in 1987. The United States has long used since used its oil reserves.

Again, I hate to be an alarmist, but I have not come across ANYTHING saying that it is not true. Oil production is going down, and has been for the last several years(since 2000). We are not and have not discovered any new large oil reserves in decades.

Where's the beef? Rather.. where's the oil?

You cannot go by what OPEC, or even our own USGS and EIA say. It's propaganda, and they even admit it.

More NEW oil reserves have been discovered in the past 20 years than were know to exist prior to that time. Technology is also advancing such that known reserves yield more oil before they are tapped out. There is a LOT of oil left. A decrease in production is not a sign of dwindling supply so much as a profitability move by the cartels.

I disagree.

See my edit. If you consider "a lot" to be half the currently known supply, I respectfully ask you to wake up.

I guess we will see. But you know it is attitudes like yours that are going to sink us.

Oman's Oil Yield Long in Decline, Shell Data Show
By JEFF GERTH and STEPHEN LABATON

The Royal Dutch/Shell Group's oil production in Oman has been declining for years, belying the company's optimistic reports and raising doubts about a vital question in the Middle East: whether new technology can extend the life of huge but mature oil fields.

Internal company documents and technical papers show that the Yibal field, Oman's largest, began to decline rapidly in 1997. Yet Sir Philip Watts, Shell's former chairman, said in an upbeat public report in 2000 that "major advances in drilling" were enabling the company "to extract more from such mature fields." The internal Shell documents suggest that the figure for proven oil reserves in Oman was mistakenly increased in 2000, resulting in a 40 percent overstatement.

There never will be the downfall of society. The economy may get much worse and many more people considered poor, the US may even become close to a third world country, but society has always been about the wealthy and the US is too big and generally too wealthy to fall into complete despair. Much of the middle class may disappear and US power may wane, but society won't. You'll just be living without the creature comforts and international influence of which you are currently accustomed to.

You know that if President Bushes Energy Advisor is sounding the alarm, things are pretty bad.

That should keep you busy for a while, Mwilding. :)

Note: I have purposefully not linked to any sites that could be considered extremist propaganda sites. If I did, I could easily quadruple the size of this post.

Me too, but I suspect it'll take a few hundred years for Western civilization to fall (read not in our lifetimes)
