Strange "flame" in the sky

So I was sitting outside with my parents and my neighbor when I noticed a small flame in the sky. We originally assumed it was maybe a lit firework piece after an explosion (they are shooting fireworks close by). But it wasn't falling to the ground. It was moving at a steady pace. The original pace was very similar to what a 35,000ft airplane would look like from the ground. And then, the flame started to get a bit smaller, and the object or small flame started to speed up. Gradually gaining speed, it was going pretty fast and then it disappeared out of my sight.

Does anyone know what this is? ICBM trying to enter/leave the atmosphere? Fighter jet afterburner? (though it would seem out of scale, a fighter jets afterburner isn't 3x the size like this flame was... it definitely must have been something related to the atmosphere). A private spaceship or rocket entering/leaving atmosphere? Space shuttle re-entering the atmosphere? Anyone have any ideas? International Space Station flyby?

I live in a Chicago suburb. We don't generally see many stars since there is a lot of light surrounding our area.

I'm an avid astronomer and this sounds like typical space debris which is common but I've never seen space debris without a telescope.

Space debris will get brighter and them dimmer and move very quickly across the sky like a small comet.

Yeah but this seemed to start off slow and gained speed.

What you saw was swamp gas, reflecting light off the surface of mars.

Now... if you'd be so kind as to look into the red light...
