At the aquariam at the Wilhema zoo in Stuttgart, Germany... there were 2 or 3 of them in the tank in question. They were like spheres, except compressed sideways (so 3d ovals)... orangish with white stripes or spots IIRC. No easily discernable mouth/fins (and I'm not sure if what I thought were eyes were in fact eyes). They were just floating in place - almost compeltely stationary. I think they were about 5" tall and maybe 3" wide, maybe 4" long (?) but the water may have distorted the size.

The Wilhelma website doesn't even seem to acknowledge the existence of an aquarium there. Any idea what these fish are called?

That's because there isn't an aquarium You must have accidentally stumbled into a secret German underwater genetics lab and spied their secret mutant fish!

One of these?

And seriously, why do people come here and post these questions instead of asking the aquarium staff while they're there? It's like the poeple who come back from a doctor's visit to ask ATOT about thgier medical problems.

...because while I was there I remembered the name of the fish, and meant to look it up later.

But are you afraid to talk to doctors and aquarium employees?
