Strange Files Windows Update Puts on My Computer

I have 2 hard drives, C & E. On E, my non root hard drive, Windows XP Pro creates alot of folders with these long alphnumeric folder names and apparently sticks the XP update files. The folders have names like 4f69e63eec17fde and then will have a sub folder called either update or SP1.

Can these be deleted?

They are the very first folders on the hard drive and its a pain just to get to the other folders since these are getting so numerous. I must have 15 or 20 folders like this.

I sure would like to either get rid of these or have them as completely hidden.

Suggestions and advice is appreciated.

Are there anything in these folders? Most likely you can delete them safely, since they're probably just temporary folders Windows creates so it has a place to unpack the downloaded .exe's

Try renaming them before you delete them JUST IN CASE.
If you just change the extension, then it can easily be put back if there is a prob, or deleted if nothing seems to access it.
Which is another idea, Right click in explorer [windows] and see the properties, when was it las accessed, modified etc
