I just built a new P4 machine and am running day old a fresh install of XP pro SP1.

Twice now, a file with no extension has mysteriously appeared on my desktop. It's 182KB and is named ~ (yes, that's it. Just: ~)

Any ideas?

OK, this last time it happened when I was transfering my OE address book over to the new machine. The ~ file appeared right after I put the Addressbook backup file on my desktop, and it appears to have all my address book info in it.

look at its properties and try and figure out when it was created/modified, than try and remember if you can correlate that time with running or installing an application. This is not Windows behavior, my guess would be a 3rd party application.

BTW, is the file marked hidden/system?

Not hidden or system. It seems to popup anytime I put a file on my desktop. Look at my edited post for more info.

That is a copy of the outlook express address book. It is a bug from the latest security patch for OE SP1. You can safely delete that file.

it'll also reappear after deletion if you add anyone new to your address book!
