Strange failure: black screen, unresponsive computer

My system ocassionally locks up but it is not a "blue screen" crash.

What happens is that screen goes black (monitor says "no video signal") and the computer is totally unresponsive, ctrl-alt-delete doesn't work etc. After turning off power, the computer usually comes back, but of course, I ocassionally get corrupted files.

This seems to happen most often when I am in the middle of a playing an mpeg or other video file, but it has also happened when merely bringing a window to the forefront on my desktop.

Does anyone know what is the most likely culprit here? What is a good way to get to the bottom of this. I am afraid that eventually a system file will get corrupted and prevent me from booting completely.

I am running....
* asus a8n premium
* msi NX6600GT pcie graphics
* ocz DDR memory
* windows xp professional

Many thanks for any assistance.

If the computer is still powered up and the video just goes blank, you might try to update the video card drivers to the most recent set. If that doesn't work, try a different video card if you have one sitting around.

If you DO have the most recent drivers, thats probably what happened. Try going back to drivers provided on the disc with the video card, or from the card manufacturer's site.

Thanks everyone,

I have updated bios and vga driver. No failures since, although the problem was sporadic.

Will keep fingers crossed as I play doom3...
