Strange exchange with hiring manager from a big company

Argo

Lifer
I sent my resume to a rather large company that my friend refered me to. Few days later I received an e-mail from hiring manager, asking me if I had a more detailed resume. That was it, just that one question. About the same time she also left a voicemail on my home number, asking me to call her.

I wasn't sure what exactly she meant by a more detailed resume - so I replied to her asking which areas of my resume she'd like for me to expand further. At the same time I called her and left a message, leaving my cell phone number for her to call.

Well, a week passes and nothing, which is weird because apparently they thought enough of me to e-mail and call me. So I e-mail her once again, asking if I'm still being considered for the position and what is the status of the whole process. Well, within 1 hour she replies, asking "have you sent me your detailed resume??????????????" Yes, she used all those question marks. Now, I'm confused because I asked her a question which she never answered. So one more time, I replied - asking her which area of the resume she would like to be more detailed. Because, honestly I'm not sure I understand what she means by more details. Well, over a day has passed and no reply. What do you guys take of this?

she sounds annoyed. It reflected poorly that you had to keep asking for direction instead of taking the initiative to do something.

I don't think it reflected poorly on him. The hiring manager should realize that most people don't keep a simple resume and a detailed resume, so if she wanted more info she should have been specific.

I realized that and I actually thought about just adding more detail to my resume and sending it to her without asking any questions. However, my resume is failrly detailed - it mentions all the major skills and experiences I have. I don't know if she wants me to list my course work, which would be odd since I graduated 4 years ago, or maybe she wants me to list all my skills along with how many years I've used them for. In other words, don't you guys think she's being a little vague with her request?

maybe your emails arent getting to her for some reason? maybe they are going to her spam folder and she is never getting them?

I'd say screw her. If they want more detail (mind you remume's are generally no more then 1 page) that's what interviews are for. Ask her if you can come in personally to discuss.

most likely they wanted more info on your skills or job duties

you should have taken the job description they had and tailored your resume more specifically to it

i say your chances of gettign hired now are pretty low...you should have at least called until you got him on the phone and asked directly what is it he wanted more info on...

Yeah, I kinda realized my chances are pretty low when she used 10 question marks in the same sentence. F*ck, the job was in Hartford anyways - not sure I'd want to live there.

P.S. I'm actually contemplating replying something to the tune of:

Dear Name,

Since it's been over a week and you don't appear willing to help me understand what it is I'm required to provide, I believe it's best you remove my candidacy from consideration for this position.

Sincerely,

Joseph...

Therein lies the rub... She wants something from you and hasn't provided enough detail for you to figure out what she wants. On the one hand, she wants more detail, but as you said - It's all there.

My question to you: Do you want to work someone that does not value clarity?

I think the hiring manager is at fault for not making clear what she wanted more detail about. And her reply to your question strikes me as odd.

If I was in your position, I'd also have no idea what in the world she was looking for.

they probably have someone else in mind, probably some VP's son for that opening, so they are doing everything to stop you from applying.

i would just email her back a more detailed resume....just add more wherever you can..and ask her if this is what she wanted.
