Strange Event Viewer message in System

I run a domain at home (doesn't everyone? 😉 ) W2K3 Ent is my NOS.

I was checking the logs this morning and found this error. The Source is MrxSmb.

Screenshot of error message

Master Browser? As in Global catalog server? I don't understand. The computer "HTPC" is my home theater PC. It's just a WinXP client on the domain. I didn't set it up any differently than any other box on the network.

What's this mean and how do I fix it, please?

Bumping your own OS posts so soon? 🙂 Anyhow, Netbios keeps track of what machines are on your network (that is what you see when you open the network neighborhood). In a peer to peer model, each machine can possibly be the 'master browser' (the one that maintains the list of machines available to everyone). When your second machine is coming up, it looks around and finds another system. The systems have an 'election' to determine who should be the master browser.

If you google for master browser you'll find registy settings to force machines to always be a client, always be a master, or to elect (the default, as your seeing is elect).

The other thing you can do is just ignore it, the message is normal and doesn't indicate anything is wrong.

Thanks much, Bill. I was worried about this error as I'd never seen it before. I appreciate the heads up. I'll ignore it.
