So I've got a gig of dual channel ddr 400 ram, but I'm getting insufficient memory errors what's up with that? I'm not running anything more than I'm running typically. I've rid my system of spyware, for the most part. But this only happens when the system has been on all day. I can't even get a command prompt when that's happening.

Apart from a problem with the RAM or memory controller itself (run MEMTEST on each stick separately to find out), I would suspect a virus or spyware app is eating up the available system memory.

If you haven't already tried... bring up task manager and see if you really are low on memory and what app (if any) is eating it up. If it's a specific application, trouble shoot that one (patch/update etc.) If nothing looks out of whack, start trouble shooting the memory itself.
