Strange DVI / HDMI monitor issue

I've got the ASUS VH236H 23" Widescreen Full HD LCD Monitor - 1080p, 1920x1080, 20000 :1 Dynamic, 2ms, DVI, HDMI

When I have the DVI cable plugged in, I get full 1920 x 1080 resolution, and the screen is filled from edge to edge. When I plug in an HDMI cable, the monitor has a 1 1/2" wide black border around the entire edge. I go into Windows 7 control panel, and it says the resolution is 1920 x 1080, and won't allow me to make it any higher. I tried accessing the settings on the monitor itself to "stretch" the display from top to bottom and left to right to fill the screen, but the options to change the display on the monitor itself are disabled.

Anyone have an idea as to what is wrong?

Are all HDMI cables the same? I had to buy it separate because the monitor only came with a DVI.

Happen to me on my 24 you need to figure out how to overscan with your video card via video card options - cat or whatever nvid uses

Thanks for the hint. I was able to do a search and find that ATI defaults 1920 x 1080 from the HDMI out to underscan (why, I have no idea). I was able to find the following instructions:

1) Find the screen in your Catalyst Control Center

2) Right click the image of the device in the bottom part of the box and choose configure

3) when that pops up, there will be a couple places you can look, gpu scaling and there should be a overscan/undserscan slider there too depending on the version of ccc you are using.

Which video card are you using? If ATI, it may be doing overscan compensation when it's not needed.
