Strange disconnect problem in WoW

Here is the note i sent to blizzard's technical support:

Situation:
I recently returned after canceling my WoW account. I resubscribed and reactivated my account. My friends in RL talked me into trying it again on their server and decided to give it another run. Before I cancelled my account I had an lvl 34 mage and an lvl 1 auction house proxy in Iron Forge. I wished to play these characters.

Problem description:
I logged into my mage. I was disconnected after about 1 minute of being logged in. No problem I thought, it is just prime time in the largest city in the game. So I started an alt to play around on. No disconnects, he was just fine and played him for a few hours. Then I try to get back on both my characters in iron forge. I log onto them and I get disconnected, I still believe it is iron forge lag. So I log into as one and during the minute or two that I have before I get disconnected, I run all the way to the dwarf newbie zone. I then get disconnected, and I soon log back in as him after my friend in real life told me that he has gone offline. I find out that he did not move an inch in iron forge and did not make it to the dwarf newbie zone. I see everyone as "Unknown entity" as him when i am in as him. He also can move and see everyone else move just fine, however he cannot chat in anyway or actually move, for no matter where he is when he is disconnected, he returns to the same position as when he logged on earlier. I actually was able to log onto the mage a few hours later and teleport to the NE's capital city but i soon got the same disconnect. Today and yesterday I was able to log onto him and play around without any trouble but just now I try to log onto him (he is in stormwind) and it is doing it again, can start the teleportation process but it never appears as a bar. Same thing is happening to the one in iron forge. The alts I started up after resubscribing are not doing this and have also been thru heavily populated areas. But I do not wish to play my low level alts, I want to play the characters that I played several months back, for they are higher level and I have been thru the lower level quests way too many times. Again, this only occurs on characters that I have created before canceling my subscription; none of the ones I have created after resubscribing have done this.

Is anyone having similar problems and know how to correct this?

Specs:
Athlon64 3000+ (Venice core)
1gb Corsair XMS PC3200
Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939 (nforce3 Ultra chipset)
Geforce 6800GT 256mb DDR3
Windows XP 64bit edition (Final), with all updates
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS
Western Digital Raptor 10,000 RPM SATA
Nothing is overlocked, everything running at default settings at nominal temps.

Drivers:
nvidia forceware version 77.72 WHQL Candidate
nvidia nforce unified drivers 6.56 (only IDE drivers in beta and I use a SATA Hard drive, all other drivers in it are WHQL)
Creative Labs SB Audigy2 ZS driver version 2.03.0003

Setup:
1. No 3rd party mods or custom UIs
2. No background applications running
3. No spyware/viruses/adware/malware, This includes keeping all antispyware/antivirus applications (avast) up to date with latest definitions and versions. Scan every night with the said antivirus software (and Trend Micro's house call), spybot search and destroy, adaware SE and microsoft antispyware. I also have a NAT based firewall protection in my router coupled with an nvidia hardware firewall on my nforce3 ultra. Keeping all antivirus and antispyware software up to date daily, including windows update.
4. No problems with any other games (CounterStrike:Source, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, etc. all work flawlessly), except for BF2 but that is another story and has to do with Electronic Arts not knowing how to write software, too bad the game is fun.

Cliff notes:
1. Characters created before my recent cancelling / resubscribing experience frequent disconnects within 2 minutes of logging on.
2. Does not occur on characters created after resubscribing.

Their response:

The whole function of a virus is to be malicious and get around virus checkers. They are updated daily with new ones. A virus scanner is only updated once monthly and that is only if the virus has been found an a method of quarantining it is found.

if its a virus then its an impressive one to get by me. Although if it was a virus (which i am sure it is not), then why does it only effect characters created before i cancelled my account and ones created after i resubscribe work fine?

My high level characters on other servers seem fine

A virus that affects world of warcraft characters? Is blizzard retarded?

I think you sent too much information to tech support, this confused them so they gave you a non-helpful response. A simple, "I get disconnected immediately after logging on with character X on server X, but not character Y on server X" would probably get a better response.

Try the following:

Delete or rename you WTF, WDB and interface folders.
Run a surface scan of the HD which WoW is installed on. (a bad sector caused the same problem for me). Will need to reinstall wow if you find a bad sector.
Reinstall WoW.
Run memtest on your system. (probably not this since you aren't having problems with other games)

Tried that, did a format even, still does it

I would agree on the too much info point.

Do they have a number to call for tech support? or contact a GM in-game with the character you can play. Either requires som relatively long wait times, but it's better than an auto-response about an issue you don't have.

Try removing your router from your LAN (plug in directly) and see if that helps...:D

If that was the case, why does it only occur on that one server, smolderthorn, and not any other server? BTW, it now has started happening on new characters on that server, all the other servers are fine.

The problem may be intermittent, leading you to believe that is the case. You're not even going to try it.....? :( :)

The problem seems pretty likely to be the game, not your PC. Talk to support again and simplify your email - I really REALLY hope their initial response was a message intended for another support request, otherwise they are truly retarded!

I had the same problem last night. It's not caused directly by interface addons, but having them makes it worse.

What I did that fixed it, was just repeatedly log in and run out of the city until eventually I made it without being disconnected. *Important* do not attempt to do anything that requires a response from the server before doing so, such as talking, chatting, using a vendor, inspecting people, emoting etc - this will force you to be disconnected.

Once out of the city succesfully, log out and log in again and you should be up and running.

Are you using the nForce Network Controller (onboard Lan) ? Ever since the patch before the most recent one a lot of people have been having this type of problem with using the Networking controller and WoW. If you do you might be able to fix it by actually chaning network cards or if you don't want to do it that way you should be able to go into the properties for the Nvidia Networking Controller in the device manager there's an option to turn disable the Checksum if you do that it might work.

When I had an issue with the Nvidia ethernet controller, I only got disconnects on turning in quests. Well, I still get occasional disconnects that are not due to my DSL modem losing sync, but they are very rare, maybe once in 4 hours kind of thing.

Its something on your end not blizzards, otherwise everybody would be having this same problem, unless this has to do with the new maitenence there doing on the servers today and that they were doing yesturday.

btw, just got a response from blizzard:

This type of issue can be caused by high-latency(Travelling on your screen, but not in the world, seeing others as "Unknown entities", etc.). Please note, that we are working very hard to adress realm latency, and apologize for any inconvenience that is caused as a result of it. If you continue to experience this issue, please send in an in-game help request, and we will be able to assist you further.

Have you made any observations on latency when you get disconnects, on the off chance that by coincedence it has improved when you log in with the new characters? I'm only half serious...

It has started to happen on all of my characters on smolderthorn. My ping is usually around 75. It does not happen on any other server:(

go to a friends system or a net cafe that has WoW. Log in with your account and see if you are still having problems. If you are then it is Bliz problem, if not then it is a problem with your config. I am thinking it is a problem with your net connection or your firewall/router.

It is spreading.... it is happening to one of my friends now on the same server. All his other characters on other servers are fine. But it did this with 2 differant cable modems and 2 differant routers, i have also done 3 formats and reinstalls in that time, i still have identical problems

I had a problem when I first started playing WoW a few months ago, where anytime I gryphed into or out of Ironforge, I would either get disconnected and dropped back to the character select screen, or the game would close completely and drop me out to the Desktop.

A brief bit of intarwebbing revealed that this was related to the Realtek LAN drivers (I'm using the Realtek Gigabit Ethernet built in on my MSI K8T Neo2-FIR), and updating to the latest driver from Realtek resolved the issue.

I still get a ton of lag when I first enter the AH/Bank area of IF, or if I hearth back into IF, but I think this has more to do with the extraordinary amounts of RAM being eaten up whilst in IF. I have heard many people say that having >1GB RAM makes IF a whole ton smoother.

That said, lagging in IF has been getting noticeably worse in recent weeks than it had been.
