Strange Dial-UP problem-Cannot get by ISP server! *Problem Fixed*

I have had problems connecting by dial-up to my ISP and followed the modem tweaks found in Modem tweak guide which greatly helped my PC at home running WIN XP Home Edition. On a practically identical PC at my office, except with WIN XP Professional, I used the same tweaks and now cannot browse the web. I can reach my ISP and their web site and use e-mail, however, I cannot reach any other sites. Can someone please help?:disgust: Thanks.
 
Actually, it sounds like either a DNS problem, or the work machine is running some kind of blocker program.
I'm not sure where the DNS settings are in WinXP Pro, but that's what I would look for.
Your modem is OK, or you wouldn't get as far as you are.
I can't check it on this machine, no modem, just a NIC.
Try running windows update, and see if it can reach microsloth.

This means that everything worked fine before, right? I'd be looking at undoing those tweaks, or figuring out what else has changed.

Can you ping anything other than your ISP's website?

I tend to agree with Larz - it sounds like a DNS problem...

Control panel > Network Connections > double click on (your dialup connection) > Properties > Networking tab > Scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Advanced button > DNS tab. At this point, you need to know what your ISPs DNS addresses should be. You can call their tech-support number and ask. Enter those numbers here.
 
Thanks everyone for your replies. I will call my ISP regarding the DNS addresses, although I believe these are no longer used - something about auto-detect. When we first began using this ISP, we had to enter the DNS addresses during setup. The link above describes some of the changes I made. Thanks again - any other suggestions are welcomed😉
 
I sure don't see anything on that page that should have changed being able to access "foreign" sites...

I'm not certain what happened; when I ran the ipconfig from the Command Prompt the default gateway had no values - was completely blank! After trying several possible solutions that did not work, I ran the Create New Connection Wizard and the new connection worked fine. Beats me what happened to the gateway😕
