Hi AnadTech peeps, I'm looking for some help (title says it), here is the background...
I have two computers behind a D-Link DGL-4300 (Gamer's Lounge WLAN router). Both are 1-2 yr old AMD64 systems, connected via Gigabit to the router. My wife and I are avid gamers (lucky me 🙂 ), and lately I've really gotten into playing Team Fortress 2. She still plays Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.
When she is playing, and I try to play simultaneously, her ping shoots from ~40ms to over 400ms to the point of practically being disconnected. As soon as I quit, her ping returns to normal. Moreover, if I'm loading a web site, the same thing happens - she pings out like crazy while the site is loading; as soon as the site is done she returns to normal.
I am a Comcast Blast customer, and typically see down/up rates of 20Mbps/1.5Mbps - nothing indicates to me that this is a network issue, but because we only see it playing simultaneous online games, it is really difficult to isolate.
I've looked through the mostly unimaginative D-Link FAQs and Knowledge Base. I am running fw ver 1.6 (not the latest, but seemingly the most stable from what I've read from other users). I am running Ubuntu 7.10, she is running XP Pro. I have Gamefuel enabled, with gaming rules to route W:ET packets to her IP, and Steam packets to my IP. The only "Gamefuel" rule I have enabled is to give priority to route source packets from my SIP phone to the internets.
Any suggestions on how to isolate this problem, or ideas on what could be wrong with this picture?
Thanks!
Mike
