Strange colored lines on LCD monitor

I recently returned to my computer, and while the display was fine last time I used my computer, this time the screen is displaying many graphical errors. There are 5 evenly spaced vertical lines going across the entire height of the display, that are yellow on a while background, and bright blue on a black background. In addition, many skinny horizontal lines (mostly blue) are going across the display. These, however, do not show up inside the vertical graphical errors.

Does anyone know what would cause this? I'm not sure if the monitor is messed up or the video card. The monitor is a Dell 17" LCD 1704FPT UltraSharp, while the video card is a 3 year old Radeon AGP card (not sure of the exact model). Any help or input would be appreciated.

I'm not too sure myself, but just some ideas to try since it sounds like you don't have another monitor there to test, maybe try changing the resolution, or using the on screen controls to move the picture around or zoom in / out and see if the lines stay in the same place on the screen, or move with the image.

Sorry if this isn't any help though!

I've never heard of a monitor failing in this fashion. So I'd say it's a 99% chance either the video card or system memory that needs to be replaced. I have seen video cards fail with vertical lines across the screen.

I've seen video cards fail in all sorts of ways. Some due to drivers, some due to hardware problems.

Have you checked your connector on the back of your monitor? Usually that causes color problems though if it's not on correctly. See if a driver update might help, if not look into finding another card to test it or replacing it.

Have you done anything new recently?
