I left my computer on last night and when i woke up this morning there was a STRANGE and loud Buzzing noise (or crackling sound) coming from my system. I figured it was a bad fan and did the finger test, i ie, i touched stopped each one of my fans with my finger and listened to see if it stopped but it didn't! I checkd the CPU fan, chipset fan, PSU fan, two case fans, and the buzzing wont stop! I turned the computer off and as the system powered down (hard power off) the sound faded EXACTLY LIKE A FAN, it would buzz and a very high frequency then as the power faded it would slow down like *click* *click**click**click**click**click**click* slowly until there was nothing left. I quickly turned the power back on and the buzzing started again. After like 3 restarts the 3rd restart had no buzzing. I tried to put my ear to the system and i cant honestly located the darn origin of the noise but believe me it was pretty loud. I thought possibly it could be the capacitors but the board i have just bought has solid capcitors for this reason.

I will play with it more when i get home from work but i am very worried. I just got a new mobo and new video card last week and I am worried one of the components is bad, possibly the PSU? Anyone else have a similar problem before?

Sys specs:
Core 2 Duo e6320 @ 3010 mhz
Gigabyte 965P-DS3 @ 430 fsb
Crucial Ballistix 800 DDRIi @ 960 fsb
Seagate 7200.10 400 Gb
BFG 7950 GT not overclocked
Antec Earthwatts 500w PSU

Get a piece of rubber tubing. Place one end in your ear, and place the other end on different places in the case. It should be obvious as to location.

I had something similar to this with my new gfx card, and almost feel ashamed to admit my stupidity about it once I figured out what the problem was. Check you gfx card and see if theres a clear plastic sheet over the outside of the HSF housing. I replaced my case at the same time I got my new card about a week ago and all was fine for a few days, then this sound started that indeed sounded like something buzzing. Then I noticed it ramped up & down with my gfx card fan speed as that's what I was doing when this initially started. So next I thought I was going to have to RMA the card... until I opened the side panel while it was running and noticed a clear plastic sheet on the top of the HSF housing broke loose around the fan intake hole and was flapping extremely quick, making that of a buzzing sound. In fact one of the thin sides was actually starting to get sucked into the fan. I just grabbed it and pulled it right off while the computer was running, been all good since.
Since you checked all the other fans, it's worth a look.

It could well be the PSU. I have a buzzing sound coming from my PSU (Hiper type R 580 W), sounds like a camera flash loading up. After shutting it down hard and switching it on again the noise is much higher for a while. Try pulling the power cable or switching off the psu with the button on the back, then pull the power cable to the motherboard. If you then reattach the cable to the psu/switch it on with the button, and you still can hear that noise it must be the psu as the mobo does not have any power.
