I'm using Firefox 1.0PR.

I typed in the following:

https//:blah

blah can be any word, I think, I tried it with two other random things (at first accidentally). I get redirected to what looks like paypal. What's the deal with that?

Type https into your Google search bar. What's the first result?

Also, you have your // and : reversed.

yeah, i noticed it was reversed.

yeah, just typing https in the both the search bar and the address bar yields paypal. how weird.

another weird thing i noticed is when i type http://im/ into my browser, it says :

"Method Not Allowed
An error has occurred."

and in the address bar, the logo looks like the sun logo. I asked a friend to do the same, but they don't get the same thing. I assume it's the way this computer was configured.

Drop to command prompt and ping Paypal.

I get 216.113.188.66 - all pings dropped by design. If you get a radically different IP, something might be up.

I've had this happen before. It's usually as a result of some web site you went to loading spyware that sets an extra suffix or two. Let's see if I can remember how to fix it now...

Network Properties-->TCP/IP-->Advanced-->DNS tab

There's an option box that says 'Append these DNS suffixes' - do you have anything listed there?

I don't see anyting in that tab, or the other tabs. bizarre.

The reason I suspected something is because my system was compromised the other day. i ran adaware and spybot (per the sticky link above) but some keep coming back (might be a system restore issue) then i noticed this. weird.

It's just part of the way firefox works, using Google when you enter a bad link. For broken http:// links it takes you to microsoft.com

Example: http://http//garbage/

goes to microsoft.com
