Hi, My friend has a toshiba laptop and is running XP. We ran into a strange problem that we couldnt figure out. Maybe someone can help us out. When he first got the laptop it was fine. The time to boot up XP was normal. But after a few week of usage, we ran into a problem. Sometime XP would take a very long time to boot up. This happens randomly, we have not add any new hardware to it. The strange thing is this happens randomly. Like sometime the time to boot up would seem like normal and then other times the time to boot up is just very very long. One thing we do notice is that if we encounter a boot up that takes a very long time, if we shut it down and turn it on again , then the boot up speed is normal. We are not using hibernation or changing any settings each time. We cant seem to figure out why there is a time difference for each boot up, and the difference is huge. The long boot ups takes more than 5 minutes. Any one have any ideas? Thanks in advance!!!!

Is he connected to a broadband (i.e., cable or dsl)? Does he have a network card installed in the laptop? If so, what's the setting? DHCP? Assuming that the laptop has a network card & DHCP is turned on, manually set the network parameters in the network setting.

Whether or not he has a network card, try bootvis.exe from miscrosoft to identify the problem.

Laptop is not connected to any network or any internet connection such as dsl/cable. We will try disabling the network card to see if will help. Thanks in any case.
