Strange and annoying laptop issue

I'm on a Dell Inspiron and one day the mouse stopped working. I can still use the track pad to click and such but I can't left click or right click using the build in mouse. I did some google searching but came up empty. I'm running Windows 7. Any help is appreciated.

By trackpad do you mean touchpad? AFAIK that is the only built in HID. How can a mouse be built in? In any case, go to Device Manager and uninstall it. Then, reboot and let Windows find it and reinstal the drivers.

My older Dell XPS did not have the "tap" area built into the touchpad. I never had any problems with the physical buttons though.

Did you update/upgrade to Windows 7 or did it come with the laptop?

Also, use the asset tag from Dell to check for the latest drivers for it on Dells support page.

Yes touchpad... and by mouse I mean the physical buttons at the bottom.

Open the trackpad utility and make sure the buttons are enabled. If you left the laptop out someone might have decided to mess with you.
